How long did it take for the thick, fertile soil of the North American prairies to develop: HELP!!!!?

Ihave only seen the light sandy soil of the prairies where the average annual rainfall is about 7 inches. I would check my sources on the thick soil. The heavy soil in the area is off to the edges of the prairie landscape where there are hills and mountains. I would not describe that as 'prairie' landscape at all.
